Chief Executive John Lee on Wednesday said that as Hong Kong embraces the use of artificial intelligence, the government would step up efforts to ensure safety. Delivering his Policy Address, Lee said these efforts would be coordinated by the Chief Secretary and assisted by a new Commissioner for AI under the Digital Policy Office. These would include studying regulations for deepfakes by legislation, he said, adding that authorities would look into legislative powers to remove online content that may constitute financial fraud. He said enhancements would also be made to protect minors who use AI tools. To boost the city's competitiveness, the government would step up the promotion of AI applications across various trades. Lee said the use of AI will be introduced in various sectors including the finance, healthcare, legal, construction, transport and welfare industries.
