69How much of Hyundai Motor's dramatic stock rally can be attributed to CEO Jose Munoz? Since taking the helm in January 2025 as Hyundai Motor's first foreign CEO, Munoz has faced U.S. tariff pressure, intensifying competition and a rapidly changing auto market. Yet the company's stock has nearly doubled, rising from around 220,000 won ($159) when he took over to 415,000 won as of Friday's close. Munoz can point to several achievements. He has put a greater focus on the group's U.S. business, where Hyundai Motor has maintained its market share despite the 15 percent U.S. auto tariff. The company has also expanded its hybrid lineup and increased local production in North America. At the same time, Munoz has pushed Hyundai Motor, Kia and Genesis to work more closely on engineering, manufacturing, purchasing and distribution to cut costs and protect profits. Those efforts have helped Hyundai Motor maintain strong sales, despite a challenging business environment. Second-quarter revenue hit a record 49.2 trillion won, but operating profit fell more than 20 percent from a year earlier as tariff

The company said it has completed underwriting agreements with KB Securities and NH Investment & Securities, after selecting the two firms as lead underwriters for its initial public offering (IPO) in June. Travel Wallet and the underwriters are now working through the follow-up steps required ahead of the listing. Travel Wallet is also converting its financial statements to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), the global accounting rules that make financial statements comparable across countries and are typically required of companies listing on major exchanges. The company is working with Samjong KPMG, the Korean member firm of KPMG, and has completed two rounds of on-site reviews so far to update its financial reporting system and accounting policies accordingly. 52Korea's Kakao Corp. said Friday it plans to split its major businesses, including its popular messenger service KakaoTalk, into two entities as part of efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The plan to split the company into KakaoAI and KakaoX was approved at a board meeting, the company said in a regulatory filing. Kakao plans to complete the spinoff by Jan. 1 next year, and relist KakaoAI on Jan. 27. The newly created entity, KakaoAI, will oversee the company's popular messenger app KakaoTalk, with the goal of growing into an "AI core company" by connecting AI with advertising and commerce, the company said in a release. The company said it plans to create new revenue models and aims to generate more than 6 trillion won ($4.3 billion) in sales at KakaoAI by 2030. Kakao's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chung Shin-a will lead the new company. The existing Kakao Corp. will be rebranded as KakaoX and serve as the investment arm for future growth engines. 45Samsung SDI, the battery-making arm of Samsung Group, said Friday it will sell part of its stake in Samsung Display to raise funds for future growth investments. Samsung SDI said in a regulatory filing that it will transfer 13.088 million shares in Samsung Display to the display maker, representing about 33 percent of its holdings. The shares are valued at about 4.45 trillion won ($3.2 billion). Once the transaction is completed, Samsung SDI's stake in Samsung Display will fall to 10.2 percent from 15.2 percent. Samsung SDI did not disclose specific plans for using the proceeds, but the funds are expected to be used for facility investments, including its battery plant under construction in New Carlisle, Indiana. The stake sale is seen as reaffirming Samsung SDI's commitment to expanding investments to build a foundation for medium- to long-term growth as the company works to improve its earnings. Demand for energy storage systems and uninterruptible power supply systems has been growing rapidly, driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers. Samsung SDI has also been ma

43SAN FRANCISCO — Genesis will shore up profitability against tariffs from the United States by deepening engineering and manufacturing ties with Hyundai Motor Group, key executives from the Korean auto brand said Thursday (local time). Hyundai Motor CEO Jose Munoz pointed to what he described as long-running technical cost reduction programs, which he said allow the group’s auto brands — Hyundai Motor, Kia and Genesis — to standardize parts and improve quality while lowering expenses at the same time. Munoz outlined a broad list of areas where the carmakers are pursuing shared savings — engineering, manufacturing, design, production, supplier contracts and distribution. "It is fair to say that the group has done way better than most of our competitors (despite the tariff shock)," Munoz told reporters during a press conference, a day after the Genesis GV90 world premiere. He cited continued growth of Hyundai Motor sales to back up the strategy. The carmaker reported record quarterly sales of 49.21 trillion won ($35.28 billion) between April and June. The sales include those from

43Sending money abroad can be an exercise in uncertainty, but Toss Bank’s overseas remittance service has helped customers save an estimated 1 billion won ($720,000) in fees during its first six months of operation. The digital bank said Friday that transfers made between January and July cost significantly less than conventional wire methods, driven primarily by waived transaction and exchange fees. Under the traditional system, overseas transfers can incur an electronic transmission fee of 8,000 won and a transfer fee starting at 5,000 won, for a combined cost of about 13,000 won per transaction, based on disclosures from the Korea Federation of Banks’ consumer portal. Toss Bank said its service eliminates intermediary bank fees and is waiving its 3,900 won transfer fee through Dec. 31. The bank said conventional transfers can pass through multiple intermediary banks, with fees deducted along the way and leaving recipients with less money than the sender intended. For example, a $10,000 transfer can arrive short of the intended amount, forcing the sender to make another payment and po

43Samsung Electronics is poised to return at least 100 trillion won ($72.4 billion) to shareholders, industry sources said Friday, following a similar announcement by its chipmaking rival SK hynix amid record earnings driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) boom. The world's largest memory chip maker is expected to announce what could be its largest-ever shareholder-return initiative at a board meeting as early as later Friday or next week, according to the sources. It would mark the final year of Samsung Electronics' three-year shareholder-return policy for 2024-26, which calls for returning 50 percent of its free cash flow to shareholders. In particular, industry observers expect the company to return more than 100 trillion won through a special dividend, based on an estimated annual operating profit of 390 trillion won. The company may also buy back its own shares to fund special performance bonuses for employees. Samsung Electronics' second-quarter net profit jumped nearly 1,300 percent to 90 trillion won from a year earlier, on the back of strong demand for semiconductors linked to
