Rangers at Þingvellir National Park stopped a tour company bus during the weekend because of an oil leak. The national park manager says it is being considered whether the incident should be reported. The company's CEO says he regrets what happened and that human error was to blame. "The rangers noticed that there was a lot of oil contamination in several car parks and virtually followed the trail up to Hak, where the bus was leaking oil heavily. They politely asked the driver to stay put and request another bus. It would not have been responsible to drive it back to Reykjavík," says Einar Á. E. Sæmundsen, national park manager at Þingvellir. He says the leak was substantial. He says the incident is unfortunate, as it is not good for oil to enter the natural environment. Incidents like this happen occasionally, and the rangers have specialised equipment for cleaning up oil. But what we perhaps found most reprehensible was that the driver told us he had requested a replacement bus the day before because it had been leaking even more then, in Skaftafell somewhere in South Iceland.
