The $7 Billion Race to Save Cryptocurrencies from Quantum Computers

Despite rumors and fearmongering, quantum computers remain years away from threatening current financial systems. However, the cost of preparing for them has already become real. In March, Google researchers estimated that a sufficiently advanced quantum computer could break 256-bit elliptic-curve cryptography within minutes. This is the same type of encryption used by crypto wallets and custody systems.
