Sýn to stop broadcasting television news

Commercial channel Sýn is broadcasting its final television news bulletin this evening. The programme Ísland í dag will also be discontinued. Sýn will therefore devote greater resources to news services on Vísir and Bylgjan and focus on delivering news where demand for news content is high. Television news has been a key part of the station's operations since it was founded as Stöð 2 in 1986. Its name was changed last year to Sýn, linking it with the telecommunications company that owns the media operation. Sýn says news consumption has increasingly shifted from linear television to digital media. At the same time, the revenue base of Icelandic media has weakened. According to Statistics Iceland figures, the majority of advertising revenue went to international technology giants in 2024, and Sýn says this makes competition between privately owned media and Ríkisútvarpið (RÚV) in the advertising market even more challenging.
