President of ASÍ: Campaign funding must be out in the open
Finnbjörn A. Hermannsson, president of Alþýðusamband Íslands (Icelandic Confederation of Labour), says it is important to take stock of the campaign which took place ahead of the referendum. Jón Ólafur Halldórsson, chair of Samtök atvinnulífsins (Confederation of Icelandic Enterprise), says it is positive that the issue has now been settled. It can be put to one side and the focus can turn to bringing down interest rates and inflation. “This is simply the decision of the people and we have to live with it. Life goes on, and there is now a certain resolution to this issue that has divided the country,” Finnbjörn says. “Who said what, what was true and what was false” Finnbjörn says the closeness of the result means there will be a process of taking stock. “Of who said what, what was true and what was false during this campaign,” he says. “What is positive is that a great many people took part in the discussion, particularly young people,” Finnbjörn says. He says this will be followed by a broader discussion of the social issues that were at the centre of the campaign, such as fisheries and agriculture.
