Lyssna: Local elections could prove decisive in approval of new nuclear power There are various advanced plans or feasibility studies for new nuclear power in 17 of Sweden's 290 municipalities. The first application in over 50 years concerns a nuclear power plant in Valdemarsvik on Sweden's south-east Baltic coast. To make it easier to expand nuclear power, the government has introduced a new permit process, where the municipality must give its decision early, before the review in the Land and Environmental Court. And in Valdemarsvik, the result of the municipal election could be decisive in whether the municipality approves or rejects the nuclear power plans.
