Short-term funds for Indian lenders may turn expensive after early closure of FX deposit scheme

MUMBAI: A fall in premiums that Indian lenders shell out for short-term funding is set to be short-lived as an early closure of the non-resident deposit scheme may push lenders to rely on these funds to meet liquidity needs in a month’s time. The FBIL three-month benchmark rate for certificates of deposits moved higher, and the spread over similar maturity treasury bill yield touched 130 basis points, after easing to an over five-week low of 110 bps last week. The Reserve Bank of India cut short its zero-cost FX swap facility for banks by a month to August 31, after inflows of over $50 billion. Outstanding CDs had skyrocketed to a record high of 7.03 trillion rupees ($73.47 billion) till July 31, registering a staggering jump of almost 25% over December end. Traders, however, expect the figure to ease in August, before jumping in September again. India’s first blue bond draw nears as issuers line up, bankers say “CD issuances are expected to increase in September vis-a-vis August given higher refinancing requirements of around 2.25 trillion rupees for banks,” Basant Bafna, head of fixed income at Mirae Asset Investment Managers (India). India's first blue bond draw nears as issuers line up, bankers say

MUMBAI: India’s first blue bond sale is imminent as a state-run financial institution and a local civic body aim to tap the novel debt market before the end of September, according to a company official and two merchant bankers. Blue bond is market nomenclature for debt securities that are used to fund ocean- and water-related projects, targeting investors that have a mandate to invest for environmental protection. Globally, over $15 billion in blue bonds had been issued by mid-2025, according to the World Bank. The two potential issuers are Sagarmala Finance Corp, which is a state-owned maritime-focused lender, and Vadodara Municipal Corp, which runs a local body in India’s western state of Gujarat. Sagarmala Finance Corp Managing Director L.V.S. Sudhakar Babu told Reuters that the financier, which is eyeing up to 10 billion rupees ($104.5 million) of such bonds, could tentatively target the last week of September for the sale. Sagarmala finances projects that strengthen India’s maritime ecosystem, last-mile port connectivity, shipbuilding, inland waterways and coastal road networks. India’s maritime lender set to launch country’s first blue bond, top exec says Vadodara, hometown

INR weighed down by muted local equities as oil prices stay elevated

The Indian rupee depreciated 7 paise to close at 95.68 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, weighed down by elevated crude oil prices and lingering geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Local shares also closed lower on Tuesday as rising oil prices and global bond yields amid an apparent impasse in Middle East peace talks rekindled inflation and interest-rate worries. The benchmark indices ended lower on Tuesday, with the NIFTY 50 closing at 24,154.90 (down 132.75 points, or 0.55%) and the BSE SENSEX closing at 77,235.46 (down 492.70 points, or 0.63%). Meanwhile, the USD/INR pair is likely to trade with a slight negative bias, pressured by the delay in the deal between the US and Iran, rising crude oil prices and broader dollar support. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 95.68 against the greenback and traded in a range of 95.64-95.69 during the session. It eventually settled at 95.68 (provisional), lower by 7 paise from its previous close.

India's Tata Sons adjourns annual shareholder meeting days after chairman exit, source says

India’s Tata Sons has adjourned its annual general meeting that was scheduled for August 18, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Tuesday. The postponement comes days after Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said he would not seek reappointment when his term ends in February 2027, following months of disagreements with Tata Trusts, the group holding company Tata Sons’ controlling shareholder. Tata Trusts set up a selection committee last week to recommend a new chairman for Tata Sons. The trusts hold a controlling stake in Tata Sons and appoint a third of its directors, who have veto powers over key decisions. India’s Tata shares fall as Chandrasekaran decides to step down Tata Trusts and Tata Sons did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. The succession process is one of the most significant decisions facing the 158-year-old conglomerate, whose listed companies have a combined market value of about $277 billion. Tata Sons is also facing pressure from minority shareholder Shapoorji Pallonji Group to pursue a public listing, an issue on which Tata Trusts and its chairman, Noel Tata, are expected to have significant influence.
