TOKYO: Japan’s Nikkei share average fell on Tuesday, putting it on course to snap a five-day winning streak, as a stalemate in the Middle East conflict drove oil prices higher and renewed concerns about bond market risks and inflation. The Nikkei dropped 1.1% to 68,460.56 by late morning, after a 5.5% gain over the previous five trading sessions. The broader Topix eased 0.2% to 4,177.50. A truce between the US and Iran expired this week, with Washington ruling out extending a ceasefire and Tehran saying it would shift to a “fully offensive” military posture. Crude oil climbed as traffic through the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping corridor again ground to a halt, and concerns about global inflation saw bond yields jump, including in Japan. “Rising interest rates tend to highlight the relative overvaluation of share prices,” said Wataru Akiyama, an equities strategist at Nomura Securities. “Underlying concerns regarding persistently high inflation — which are present in both Japan and the US — could well act as a drag on the stock market going forward.” At the same time, shipping stocks benefited from expectations for higher freight rates, and marine transport was the best performe

Australian shares edged higher on Tuesday, with gains in mining heavyweight BHP and biotech major CSL helping offset a pullback in bank stocks, while global risk appetite remained muted amid stalled efforts to negotiate a US-Iran peace treaty. The S&P/ASX 200 index inched 0.1% higher to 9,078.90 points by 0040 GMT, and was set to snap a four-day losing streak. The benchmark fell 0.5% on Monday. BHP gained as much as 4.2% after the miner topped profit estimates for the year and announced its highest total dividend in four years, propelling the mining sub-index higher. Peers Rio Tinto and Fortescue also edged 0.3% higher each. Healthcare stocks rose as much as 7.6%, set for their best day in over six years, fuelled by biotechnology giant CSL gaining more than 18%.
